Splash247: SeaARCTOS adds CO2 approval to stack monitor

SeaARCTOS has secured Lloyd’s Register type approval for carbon dioxide monitoring and reporting using its ARCTOS-1 stack-mounted emissions system, extending class approval of the technology beyond sulphur emissions.
The compact unit continuously monitors exhaust gases and records emissions alongside vessel position data before transmitting the information through its own satellite connection to a cloud platform. The system is powered using waste heat from the vessel’s exhaust and does not rely on shipboard power or communications.
SeaARCTOS said ARCTOS-1 has completed more than 20,000 hours of testing at sea. The unit weighs less than 3.5 kg and can be installed on an exhaust stack in under an hour without welding or cutting.
The system also incorporates tamper alerts and location-locked tracking intended to prevent manipulation of the emissions record or AIS spoofing. Data can be accessed remotely by owners and potentially shared with regulators, ports, flag administrations and other stakeholders.
SeaARCTOS is positioning direct CO2 measurement as a way of giving owners a clearer record of actual vessel emissions as exposure to the EU Emissions Trading System and FuelEU Maritime increases. The company also sees applications in ship finance and chartering, where emissions performance is increasingly being incorporated into portfolio and procurement decisions.
The latest approval follows an LR approval in principle granted to ARCTOS-1 in 2023 covering its technology for monitoring CO2, methane and sulphur dioxide.
Splash reported in March that ARCTOS-1 had subsequently secured full LR type approval for sulphur dioxide reporting, giving the system independent backing for continuous SO2 monitoring as emission control areas expand.
The new CO2 approval therefore marks the next step in the certification of a system SeaARCTOS ultimately intends to use for monitoring several exhaust gases from the same stack-mounted device.
