The Port of New York and New Jersey handled 4.4m teu in the first half of 2026, keeping container traffic broadly level with the same period last year despite continued uncertainty across US import markets.

The gateway finished the period with a stronger June, when total container throughput increased 12% year on year.

New York-New Jersey ranked as the second-busiest US port for loaded containers during the month.

The first-half result represents a recovery from the weaker opening months of the year. Volumes for the first quarter stood at 2.18m teu, down 1.2% from the corresponding period in 2025, after winter weather delayed vessel arrivals and disrupted cargo flows.

March was the strongest month of the opening quarter, with throughput rising 6.9% to 837,993 teu as ships delayed by February storms arrived at the port.

The improved June performance brought the six-month total back in line with last year.

New York-New Jersey is the largest container gateway on the US east coast and serves one of the country’s biggest consumer and distribution markets.

The port’s six marine terminals handle container, ro-ro, bulk, breakbulk and project cargo, with rail connections providing access to inland markets across the US northeast and Midwest.

The Port Authority is progressing its Port Master Plan 2050, covering terminal capacity, landside freight connections, rail infrastructure and other investments intended to accommodate long-term cargo growth.
