Splash247: Valparaíso and Chilquinta advance port electrification plans

Puerto Valparaíso and the Chilean electricity group Chilquinta are working on a plan to electrify the port’s current operations and its upcoming expansion.

The partnership involves assessing increased electrical capacity, electrifying port equipment, implementing renewable energy initiatives, and installing onshore power supply systems for ships to connect to the grid while docked.

This effort is crucial for Valparaíso’s growth strategy, aiming to power new infrastructure and equipment with renewable energy instead of traditional fuels.

Franco Gandolfo, the general manager of Puerto Valparaíso, expressed the goal of transitioning existing port activities to entirely electric power while ensuring that future developments rely on renewable sources.

After nearly a year of collaboration, the agreement sets a framework for future cooperation rather than immediate construction projects.

Valparaíso is also advancing its expansion plans, emphasising the need for a significant increase in electrical capacity as part of its long-term infrastructure planning amid ongoing capacity expansion and concession processes.
