Industrial action has begun across Tasmania’s commercial ports today after maritime workers failed to reach agreement with state-owned port operator TasPorts over a new enterprise agreement.

Members of the Maritime Union of Australia and Australian Maritime Officers Union are taking protected industrial action affecting launch masters and vessel traffic service officers responsible for coordinating vessel movements across the state’s 11 commercial ports.

The action has the potential to affect vessel movements because the workers provide round-the-clock services supporting ship arrivals and departures and the safe operation of Tasmania’s ports.

The Fair Work Commission approved the unions’ application for protected industrial action following months of negotiations with TasPorts.

The dispute centres on wages, rostering and superannuation. The unions are seeking pay increases above the levels offered by TasPorts, an even-time roster for launch masters and an increase in employer superannuation contributions from 12.5% to 15%.

The MUA said TasPorts had largely maintained what it described as a “no change” position during negotiations over a proposed four-year agreement.

Tasmania’s ports handle the majority of the island state’s international and interstate freight, including containers, bulk commodities, forestry products and agricultural cargoes.

The unions said they remain prepared to continue negotiations with TasPorts while the protected action proceeds.
