Ningbo-Zhoushan Port is moving ahead with the second phase of its Fodu container terminal development, launching preparations for a RMB16.94m ($2.4m) package of pre-construction studies.

Zhejiang Seaport Fodu Container Terminal has started pre-tender publicity ahead of an open procurement covering the supplementary studies required to progress the second phase through its approvals process.

The work includes hydrological testing, marine environmental and ecological surveys, flood assessments, shoreline and water-area studies, environmental modelling, fisheries impact assessments and physical modelling of the planned quay and seawall. The package also covers land approval work and technical support through the regulatory review process.

Fodu is being developed in the Liuheng port area as a major new container complex for Ningbo-Zhoushan Port. The wider RMB21.1bn project is planned across 2,850 metres of shoreline and will ultimately comprise seven container berths capable of accommodating vessels of up to 200,000 tonnes.

Construction of the first phase is already underway, while the latest procurement step starts pushing the second phase through the technical and environmental approvals needed for its future development.

The Fodu project was included in China’s 15th Five-Year Plan this year and is expected to provide significant additional container handling capacity at Ningbo-Zhoushan, already one of the world’s largest container gateways.
